Leuven has undergone a metamorphosis over the past twenty-five years. A wave of urban renewal swept through the city. It started with the station neighbourhood. Other projects followed later: in the Vaartkom, the Central Workshops, Gasthuisberg or the Veilingsite. The city centre became car-free and greenery returned to the city. The university continues to grow, building new campuses, science parks and spin-off companies.

Author Joeri De Bruyn and photographer Stijn Bollaert went in search of Leuven’s DNA. What has made Leuven the city we know today? What does the future of Leuven look like? They follow four different routes: along the ring road, in the old streets of the city centre, right through the university campuses, and finally ending up in the green oases of Leuven’s abbeys.
