For the past centuries, cartographers systematically indicated the Kempen as an indeterminate void or no man’s land. Only in the early 19th century did this change. The Kempen was being colonised. Abundant space was available for heavy industry, large infrastructure works and bold experiments.
The Kempen were a laboratory where innovative insights into agriculture, poor relief or mobility were tested for the first time. This remarkable history has made the Kempen what it is today. In the future, too, the Kempen can continue to play a pioneering role in climate and welfare, energy and housing, nature and recreation.
The Kempen Atlas thoroughly maps the Antwerp Kempen for the first time. Twelve thematic maps give an insight into the spatial development and future potential of the region. More than a hundred photos of archetypal places show the Kempen in all its facets. The Kempen Atlas is the reference work and a source of inspiration for everyone who wants to help build a sustainable future for the region.
For this publication, a team of more than thirty scientists in various fields was put together. The maps were drawn by the renowned Dutch mapmakers from MUST. Leen Huet wrote stories about twenty special places in the Kempen, and Belgian top photographer Filip Dujardin went out to capture the soul of the Kempen.
This book is only available in Dutch.
