In most European cities, we know the urban ring road only as a highway. It has turned away from the city and cuts up the urban landscape. Highway x City explores a new possible future for city and highway. How can we reconcile the highway with the 21st-century city? And can it be done at all?

The book presents the results of design and theoretical research commissioned by TU Delft and the Dutch BNA in recent years. Seven multidisciplinary design teams - including UNStudio, NEXT, VenhoevenCS, Benthem Crouwel and Bijvoet - formulate new visions for the ring roads of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht.
