The construction sector is responsible for 40% of greenhouse gas emissions, 50% of energy consumption, 30% of water consumption and 50% of material flows. Hence experts are calling for a transition to a ‘circular building culture’. That means non-building and repurposing the existing as much as possible and reusing as many materials as possible. Hi! Site is one of the first projects in our country to put the circular principles into practice on a large scale and, moreover, to succeed in attaching a strong identity and aesthetic to it as well.
This book tells the story of the redevelopment of an abandoned coffee factory in Grimbergen into a vibrant place where various activities come together: offices for young companies, workshops for the manufacturing industry, recreation and sports. The designers and architects create a world of their own using the materials they found on the site.
