Just before the performance, or just after. During the rehearsal or lunch break of the artist. It is at these moments that photographer Stijn Bollaert visits. Props swing around. The coffee is already cold. No one has cleaned up before the photographer's arrival. For this publication, Stijn Bollaert takes a look in front of and behind the scenes of around 30 culture houses in Flanders. This time, the focus is not on culture itself – the ‘work’ of the culture creator – but on the infrastructure: the white cubes, theatre and concert halls, ateliers, depots, studios. These are spaces where culture is shown, made, experienced or preserved. Infrastructure literally means: what is under the structure. It is the foundation that makes the creation of culture possible. The buildings are the basic equipment of cultural life in Flanders.
